Cops: Merrick Ambulance Thief Caught

Nothing was reported stolen other than the keys, which cops said were found inside the suspect's vehicle.

Police have arrested the man who allegedly stole an ambulance from outside a Merrick fire house on Oct. 9.

According to police, Salvatore Brecciano, 46, of North Merrick, bought a 12-pack of Budweiser from 7-Eleven on Sunrise Highway on the night in question and then headed northbound on Babylon Turnpike.

He passed the Merrick firehouse, located at 2075 Meadowbrook Rd., and allegedly entered an ambulance, which was parked out front with the keys in the ignition. Cops said he put his beer down next to the ambulance and drove away.

A short time later, the ambulance was recovered near the intersection of Durham Road and North Jerusalem Road in North Merrick. Only the vehicle's keys were reported missing at the time it was found.

Brecciano was arrested at his home on Friday, and cops said the ambulance keys were found in his vehicle. He's been charged with second-degree grand larceny and will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
