Permit Parking Discussed for Merrick LIRR Station

Editor’s Note: This article was written by North and Central Merrick Civic Association President Claudia Borecky.

The Town of Hempstead's December 2012 hearing on implementing parking permits at the Merrick train station was postponed because of Hurricane Sandy.

Claudia Borecky investigated the Town's claims that they couldn't provide parking permits in Bellmore and Merrick and found that it was not true. In fact, Bellmore and Merrick were the only two train stations in Nassau County on the Babylon branch that did not have permits and purportedly, the only two that have complaints from people who cannot find a parking spot in the morning.

Borecky discovered that the contracts between the MTA and the Town allowed for permits. Parking permits have been established at the Bellmore train station with a promise for permitted spots for Town of Hempstead residents at the Merrick train station soon. We are still awaiting a hearing on this issue. Borecky asked for an evening hearing as most commuters work during the day. She is also requesting that the hearing take place in Merrick so that more residents would be able to attend to voice their concerns about the proposed permits.

At a Town Hall meeting on Feb. 19, Murray informed Borecky that the Town is waiting until the end of March for Bellmore's probation period to be over to determine if the Town will implement parking permits in Merrick. We will follow up at that time.
