Bellmore-Merrick CHSD Enhances Curriculum to Align With Common Core Standards

Administrators and department chairs in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently came together to prepare for the upcoming academic school year, discussing the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards into their curriculum. 

Superintendent John DeTommaso said that it is important that school officials remain united during the changes the district may face.

“We’re really putting instruction on the front burner now and always,” he said. “That’s the most important hat that all of us wear. The primary hat is that of instruction and it’s critical.” 

Caryn Blum, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment, said that another goal for the upcoming school year is to increase communication with parents and keep them informed of what is going on within the district. 

The district will also implement a professional development academy program this year, which will involve offering after school classes for teachers.

“This meeting was held to prepare for our staff development days,” Blum said. “The curricular theme for the year is literacy across the content areas. Every teacher will have an hour and a half workshop with a literacy/Common Core specialist with follow-up meetings by our chairs.”
