UPDATE: Police: Suspect was Armed, Tried to Enter School Building

Four Nassau County BSO officers were also hurt during the case and struggle to apprehend the suspect.

UPDATED 12:44 A.M. – Police now confirm the identities of the driver of the vehicle, as well as two others that were arrested in connection with the crime. Additionally, dectectives said that three BSO officers were injured, not four, as previously reported.

A carjacking in Hicksville and subsequent police chase lead a suspect to crash a stolen 2006 gray Infinity G35 into the side of the Harold D. Fayette School.

According to Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack of the Nassau County Public Information Office, at about 11:54 a.m., the Nassau County Police Department received a call for a car robbery on Ohio Avenue in Hicksville.

The Second Precinct, which responded to the call in Hicksville, put out a notification to notify officers of the carjacking and to look for a male Hispanic with a gun.

According to Lack, Bureau of Special Operations (BSO) Officers on patrol in the vicinity of North Bellmore saw the vehicle and followed it. After the car was stopped at a light, the BSO officers tried to block the vehicle and when the suspect realized the police were closing in on him, the chase ensued.

Lack said that the suspect made the right into the school with BSO in pursuit. The suspect then rammed one of the vehicles of the BSO officers in the back parking lot almost head on and then crashed head on into the side of the school and then jumped out of his vehicle.

According to David Feller, superintendent, North Merrick, there is a first grade classroom in the vicinity of where the vehicle crashed but the children were at a special at the time.

Lack then explained that the suspect was running towards the doors of the school. "BSO did a great job and attacked the guy before he got near the doors of the school," Lack said.

The suspect was apprehended at 12:13 p.m. and a gun was recovered at the scene.

The school was on lockdown and then went into a lockout situation, Feller said, and added that he didn't believe that any students witnessed the events.  "The police got here immediately and it's because of them that our school was really safe," Feller said.

Four BSO officers were injured. One had a possible concussion, one had a sprained hip and hamstring and the others were injured in the crash with the stolen vehicle.

Although there were reports of a second suspect, PIO cannot confirm at this time that there was another person involved.

Feller said that dismissal from the school will be normal time.
