Legislator Denenberg Honors Claudia Borecky for Women's History Month

(MINEOLA, NY) – Legislator Dave Denenberg (D-Merrick) was proud to honor Merrick resident Claudia Borecky as one of this year’s “Trailblazers” at the Women’s History Month 2013 Celebration at the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola on Monday, March 18.  Borecky was recognized for her strong civic involvement and advocacy for improving the Merrick community.

Each year, as part of Women's History Month, county legislators honor outstanding women in their legislative districts who have "blazed trails" through the wonderful work they do in their communities.

Ms. Borecky is serving her fifth year as President of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association.  During her tenure, she formed a Neighborhood Watch program to address a rash of robberies, and the Merrick Avenue Beautification Committee which takes care of the beds of trees that line the business districts of Merrick.

She united with neighboring civic associations to address issues such as the proliferation of cell towers in our community, the high cost of private water and the need for permit parking at the Bellmore and Merrick train stations.  She fought against the privatization of our sewage treatment plants, the establishing of a strip club in our community and the placement of a manmade storage island for liquefied natural gas off the south shore.  Ms. Borecky is a founding member of the Nassau County Coalition of Civic Associations, formed to unite the civic associations for county-wide issues.

Additionally, she is a founding member of Sludge Stoppers, which successfully stopped sewage from being dumped into Reynolds Channel.  Borecky is a board member of the Merrick Historical Society and member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1282.  She currently chairs Legislator Denenberg’s Disaster Response Taskforce to address not only the future of LIPA, but Nassau County’s preparedness for future storms and their aftermath.

Claudia is married 36 years to her husband, Michael, has two sons (ages 32 and 26) and is a resident of Merrick for 30 years.
