Voters Approve Merrick School Budget

Gina Piskin, Sigal Negrin elected to three-year terms.

The Merrick Union Free School District’s proposed 2013-14 budget passed with 840 yes votes compared to 382 no votes.

Superintendent Dr. Dominick Palma said that the budget that the district has spent months carefully planning is not only fiscally sound, but it also includes no cuts to existing programs or staff.

The 2013-2014 budget comes in at $45,223,466, a 4.47 percent increase over the previous year’s budget of $43,287,814. The Tax Levy is right at the New York State-allowed cap of 3.43 percent.

“The Merrick school budget was approved by a strong margin of voters,” Palma said. “This continues the longstanding commitment to education by our community. This budget will allow the Merrick District to maintain its tradition of excellence and provide students with the great services and instruction that have been the hallmark of our schools. On behalf of the administration and Board of Education, I thank the community for their support.”

Gina Piskin and Sigal Negrin were voted on to the Board of Education. Piskin received 943 votes while Negrin received 832 votes.
