North Merrick School Budget Passes

63.4 percent of voters say yes to the budget.

The North Merrick proposed 2013-14 school budget passed Tuesday, as residents gave 598 yes votes compared to 344 no votes.

Superintendent David Feller said that the budget that the district managed to avoid any cuts to programs or staff, thanks to a last-second increase in the anticipated amount of state aid the district received.

The 2013-2014 budget comes in at $28,897,000, a 4.92 percent increase over the previous year’s budget of $27,541,000. The Tax Levy is set at 3.21 percent, which is under the state’s maximum allowable cap of 3.63 percent.

"On behalf of our Board of Education, I wish to thank our community for the overwhelming support of our budget and facilities proposition," Feller said. "We are very appreciative that we received a positive vote by a margin of almost 65 percent. We wish to thank the members of our citizens’ advisory committee who helped to craft our budget for the 2013/2014 school year. Also, we wish to acknowledge the important contributions of our entire staff who provide the children of North Merrick with an outstanding educational experience."

Linda FullerWendy Gargiulo and George Hale  were voted on to the Board of Education for another term. Fuller received 531 yes votes, Gargiulo received yes 546 votes and Hale received 519 yes votes.
