Not Just Books: This Week's Library Events

There are a variety of events happening at both local libraries this week.

How often do you visit the library? There is a lot more going on than just books being checked out. Many residents are unaware of how much actually goes on at the local libraries. Also, most of the events at the Merrick Library and North Merrick Library are free to residents. We're giving you a rundown of some highlighted events happening this week, but all of the library events can always be found on our events calendar. On Tuesday, take a tour of the Galapagos Islands, without leaving Merrick. Take a virtual tour at the Merrick Library at 1:30 p.m. Mah Jongg is becoming a very popular game, and the Merrick Library is offering a beginners how-to class at 6:45 p.m. Also on Tuesday, both the Merrick and North Merrick libraries are …

We're giving you a rundown of some highlighted events happening this week, but all of the library events can always be found on our events calendar. If you're looking to get in shape and need a fun way, head to the Merrick Library on Monday at 7:00 p.m. for belly dancing lessons. There is much more going on at your local library than just books being checked out. Many residents are unaware of how much actually goes on at the local libraries. Also, most of the events at the Merrick Library and North Merrick Library are free to residents. We're giving you a rundown of some highlighted events happening this week, but all of the library events can always be found on our events calendar. On Tuesday the Merrick Library is hosting an AARP driver safety class from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For the kids, there is a Russian storytime at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday you and the little ones can enjoy a Mommy & Me class with a circus theme at 10:30 a.m at the Merrick Library. Not Just Books: This Week's Spooky Library Events

Many Halloween events are being offered at the Merrick and North Merrick Libraries this week.

Welcome to the Halloween edition of Not Just Books. Your kids might not actually go trick-or-treating until Sunday, but the Merrick and North Merrick libraries have plenty of Halloween themed events going on all week. Most of these events are free, and all of them are a great way to get some use out of those overpriced costumes. On Tuesday night at 7 p.m. the Teen Advisory Board committee is hosting a Spooktacular party for children ages 3-9 at the North Merrick Library. On Wednesday, tweens and teens from all walks of Merrick are invited to the Merrick Library at 4:15 p.m. For $3, kids in grades 6-12 will get to decorate a spooky dessert, create terrifying jewelry and other themed activities.  If you're still feeling festive on Wednesday…

There's much going on at both the Merrick and North Merrick libraries this week.

Whether you're looking for a class for your tot, your teen or even yourself, both local libraries have much to offer residents this week–and most of it is free. All this month, the Town of Hempstead Experienced Art Students Enrichment League's art show will be featured at the Merrick Library.  On Monday there is a driving course for seniors at the North Merrick Library at 10:30 a.m. offered by AARP. On Tuesday you can head to the Merrick Library at 2 p.m. to discuss current events and observations.  Later that night, both the Merrick and North Merrick libraries are having their board meetings, at their respective locations. There are a variety of things going on at the Merrick and North Merrick libraries this week.

Whether you're looking for a class for your tot, your teen or even yourself, both local libraries have much to offer residents this week–and most of it is free. On Monday, and the rest of the month, you can stop by the Merrick Library to check out the Experienced Art Students Enrichment League art show. It will be on display in the multipurpose room. For any Russian Merokeans, there is a Russian American Program meeting at the Merrick Library at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, the Long Island Senior Education Council will be at the Merrick Library at 2 p.m. to discuss housing options for seniors, and what resources are available to help seniors live at home. This Saturday from 11:00 until 1:00 children in grades 2 through 4 can read to a specially trained, registered Reading Education Assistance Dog at the Merrick Library. Appointments are made in the children's room in person or on the phone. I know because the R.E.A.D. dog is my 5-year-old Portuguese Water Dog Skimmer. This is the sixth year that we have been doing this at the Merrick Library.   more ›
