Teens gather at the Merrick Library Wednesday for the second summer cooking class hosted by chef Robert Kass.
Last time it was omelets. This time chef Robert Kass taught the teens how to make fresh veggie sushi as part of the Merrick Library summer program Wednesday evening. "I do a lot of cooking," said Matthew Cavanagh, one of the attentive teens, "and I come to these classes to learn new recipes to use at home." Prior to donning plastic gloves, Kass instructed each student to grab their paper and pen. "You'll remember the recipe better if you write it down," Kass told the class, "instead of just reading it off the page." Before long he was surrounded by the teens as he showed them how to make the night's featured dish. Teens gathered at the Merrick Library Wednesday evening as part of the Make Waves Summer 2010 Young Adult Program to learn how to make an omelet–from prepping to the finished product. Chef Robert Kass, who is about seven days away from graduating from the Culinary Academy of Long Island in Syosset, entertained those in attendance by showing his impressive set of knives and explaining the purpose of each, as well as how to crack open an egg. The first of three classes, from breakfast to dinner, Kass said that he was invited by the library in support of their summer program and was looking forward to helping the teens with prepping and learning how to cook their own omelet.
