An intersting thought from another blog site:
It's just as likely tree roots blocking the system…Read More - that happened near our house, once. During a good rain storm, the water would spot through the holes in the manhole cover, and actually lift the cover off the hole!
Interesting enough, once the city was finally convinced to repair the problem, out basement quit leaking during those storms.

You could care less that…Read More Merrick Road and south of Merrick Road streets were flooded with 5 feet of water from Sandy and created numerous dangers like contamination, mold, electrical problems, etc...Which is STILL ONGOING, any months later. In your eyes it isn't "dangerous", only "tragic" because it didn't happen in your neighborhood. Well, guess what YOU ARE WRONG.
I'll go away as soon as you stop your nonsensical postings. Don't post an article/ question if you do not want a discussion. Merrick Patch is NOT your personal blog.

Road flooding is a massive problem in this area. Clogged sewers are the reason for this.

Apart from never being cleaned out as part of any regular maintenance activity, I often see debris being deliberately swept into the sewer gratings.
