Joe Baker and the rest of the Civic do such a wonderful job improving the infrastructure and beauty…Read More of South Merrick. I hope the Merrick Road Improvement COmmittee succeeds in making a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing business district. Maybe they can work on applying for grants to get Merrick road and working conjunction with North and Central Merrick COmmunity Association to improve Merrick Ave. They can increase their occupancy rate and type of industry in town. The reason taxes are so high in our district is because we have very little industry. Merrik has the right demographics with upper middle class, literate, and involved community members. A large portion of employees in professional job sector. it just needs to become more aesthetically pleasing in its business districts. We have nice hair salons, a local movie theater, an upscale restaurant, a waldbaums, banks, gyms, that new wine bar, notable retail like the Gap and in recent years American Eagle. Ad a variety of nice restaurants like La piazza, Santorinis, etc. Even a couple of commercial buildings But we need some more industry for real jobs maybe more legal apartments on merrick ave above store fronts. We have abeautiful rebuilt library a community park a 9 hole golf course and thanks to the civics better roads and sidewalks and a refurbished local park like Julian lane and even the Merokee Preserve and Norman J. Levy Preserve we have all the elements we need we just need more industry and apartments. Maybe a couple more buildings like the one across from Chatterton school next to Uncle Ernies with some more apartments like the building on Smith Street. We just need more organized zoning so we have more than just hair salons, fast food, gyms and banks
