Founded in 1977, Merrick Woods Country Day School, a private school of nearly 200 students, emphasizes a "hands-on" approach in its pre-school and kindergarten curriculum.

Concepts to be taught are facts that are presented to children through projects, activities, fingerplays and stories, carefully thought out by the teacher and presented so that concepts taught are reinforced through repetition and variety.

Included in the school's programs are art activities, language development, music, math, science and field trips. 

Merrick Woods has also run a summer camp since 1956.
