The Merrick Union Free School District serves more than 1,700 students at its three elementary schools: Birch School, Roland A. Chatterton School and Norman J. Levy Lakeside School.

The policy for class size is as follows: grades K-1, 22 children; grades 2-6, 25 children; co-teaching, 20 children.

In addition to its full instructional program, Merrick provides extensive support services, placement of students with disabling conditions, psychological services, English as a Second Language, speech and hearing services, testing, social work services and health services. Individuals wishing for more information about any of these services can contact the Director of Pupil Services at 516-992-7293.

The Before School Program is in session at each elementary school in the district and is open on all school days from 7am until the start of school. There is a minimum of two days participation per week

The After School Program runs daily from 3pm to 6pm at each of the three elementary schools in the district. Time and assistance are offered for completion of homework assignments. Students are also provided with a variety of supervised activities which include arts and crafts, physical education and computers. Snacks are provided daily to the students. Children must attend a minimum of two days per week.
