Merokeans' Generosity on Display at Cub Scout Thanksgiving Food Drive

Young scouts fill 10 shopping carts with donated food on Thanksgiving morning.

On Thanksgiving morning, 11 members of the Webelos of Cub Scout Pack 225 gathered with their families for their annual food drive outside of Stop & Shop at the Merrick Mall.

Cub scouts asked customers, many running in for last minute Thanksgiving items, to please give a small item of non-perishable food to the those in need.  The cub scouts were thrilled at the friendly and open responses they received.

Many people provided food such as cans of corn or boxes of stuffing, and some gave money (which was used to shop for grocery donations).  From 8 a.m.- 10:30am, almost no one walked out of the supermarket without an extra item of food for the children.

One person walked out with a bag of ice for himself and five shopping bags full of food to contribute. At the end of the morning, the cub scouts filled a pick-up truck right to the top with about 10 shopping carts of food. They brought it over to Curé of Ars Roman Catholic Church, for distribution to non-denominational food pantries.

The cub scouts had a chance to see firsthand the generosity of their community, and to remember to be thankful by sharing their blessings with those less fortunate. Merrick's Pack 225 is sponsored by Curé of Ars and is open to boys from first to fourth grades.  The pack always welcomes new members.
