Eagle Scout Honored for Merrick Volunteer Work

Legis. Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, recently attended Boy Scout Troop 189 Eagle Court of Honor for Ryan Thomas Hillman at Temple B’Nai Torah in Wantagh.

Hillman is a resident of East Meadow. Gonsalves presented a Legislative Citation to Hillman in recognition of the hard work he did for his Eagle Project.

Hillman’s final project was to improve the Nigerian dwarf goats’ food system by making it safer and healthier for them. He organized scouts to renovate and repair the existing goat house at Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve in Merrick by installing a window facing the sun to keep it drier and well ventilated.  He also repaired the exterior walls with a new coat of paint.

These environmental improvements made the area safer for the goats and for the staff at the park. Hillman removed debris and weeds from the trails and cleaned up the area around the information kiosk.

He was able to coordinate volunteers from several scout troops, friends and family together with the assistance of Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and the Parks Department. Hillman’s project is a testament to the scouting community for “giving service to others.”
