Colts Baseball Team Marches for Babies

The Calhoun baseball team volunteered its time yesterday at the March of Dimes' March for Babies at Eisenhower Park.

Getting up at 6:15 a.m. on a rainy Sunday isn't the norm for the typical high school student, but 12 members of the Calhoun Colts baseball team weathered the elements to volunteer their services to the March of Dimes' March for Babies yesterday at Eisenhower Park.

The team helped out with logistics and set-up.  The Colts weren't the only baseball players in attendance.  The Colts were joined by four-time World Series champion and eight-time All-Star Darryl Strawberry and Mets great Bud Harrelson.

Former Jet great/ESPN Radio's Greg Buttle served as master of ceremonies.  The team got the opportunity to visit with Darryl, Bud and Greg before the walk.

"I was very impressed to see such a great turnout from the team," Harrelson said.  "Like we advocate at the Ducks, it is so important to get out and help your community.  The Calhoun baseball team displayed that by volunteering today to help save babies.  They should be proud of their efforts.  I was."

Strawberry, who served as the event's celebrity chair, was equally impressed.

"I can't believe that these kids were up so early on a rainy Sunday morning helping the organizers set-up for the event," he said.  It is nice to see a team working together off the field.  It helps to build character and creates team chemistry."

Eight hundred brave souls participated in the March for Babies, raising more than $750,000 to help give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year.
