Garden City Edges Past Mepham in Thrilling Opener

The Garden City High School football team beat Mepham 33-30 Saturday to advance to the second round of playoff action.

On a double-reverse pass, Matt Borges hit a wide open Chris Larkin with seven minutes left to ensure the victory for the Trojans.

Mepham scored the game's first 16 points with two touchdowns and a safety, but Garden City charged back, outscoring Mepham 20-7 in the second quarter to go into the half 23-20 Pirates.

After a scoreless third period, Garden City came up clutch in the fourth to ensure the win. Brett Stewart was 11-of-17 for 128 yards and three touchdowns for the Trojans. James Sullivan, Brian Colamussi, Tom Wright and Chris Larkin added TD catches.

For Mepham, Tyler Davis was the rushing star of the game, as he ran for 194 yards and four scores. Chris Durkin added 89 yards on the ground.

Up next for the Trojans is a showdown with Wantagh Friday at 4 p.m. at Hofstra University. If they win, Garden City will compete one week later at Hofstra at 7 p.m. for the Conference Title.
