Christopher Safina has been working in Mepham High School since 1993, and 20 years later, he has been rewarded with tenure.

Safina used to be a guidance counselor at Mepham High School before he took over as assistant principal. At last week's Bellmore-Merrick Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Henry Kiernan praised his work ethic and referred to Safina as an "invaluable member of the staff."

"His work is exceptional, and I am proud to have him working with us," Kiernan said.

The Board voted unanimously to approve Safina for tenure, and once it became official, he was given a big ovation from those in attendance. Patch took video, which is attached with the story.

Congratulations to Mr. Safina! He was our oldest two children's guidance counselor and although very happy for him, when he became asst principal, was sad for us that he wouldn't see our youngest through Mepham. No worries..he is always available to answer a question or calm a concern!

I want to take the time to congratulate Mr., Safina on his tenure as it is certainly an honor well deserved. He was my oldest son's guidance counselor and was absolutely phenominal in his capacity and of great assistance to my son. WARREN HELLER
