Merrick Kiwanis Hands Out Teacher Recognition Awards

The Merrick Kiwanis Club honored several teachers for their service Tuesday night.

The Merrick Kiwanis Club took Tuesday night to recognize Merrick teachers at a special event held at LaPiazza.

Students, parents and others were encouraged to write a letter of recognition for the teacher they thought had made the most impact on their lives.

The family-orientated event allowed those to join in on the praise for the teachers nominated.  Arlene Musnik, a fourth grade teacher at Birch School, had her whole class at the event.

Musnik, nominated by Merrick School Board President Nancy Kaplan, was recognized for her unique ability to cater to each of her students individually.  One of her current students, Alena Korins, recently won a nationwide essay contest about overcoming barriers.

"She really brings out the best in every child she teaches," Kaplan said before handing Musnik her award.

From Merrick Avenue Middle School, Michael Dolber was recognized by student Nora Charidah.

"This means even more to me because it comes from Nora," Dolber said while receiving his award.

Carol Murray, a guidance counselor at Calhoun High School was nominated Diane Kitchener, who said Murray always "treats her child as an individual, not just another number."

Murray, who received tenure three years ago, praised her deceased mother as her inspiration.  She proudly wore her tenure pin to the event.

"I'm honored and thrilled to do what I do for a living," Murray said.

There were also honorable mentions of Mrs. DeMott, a guidance counselor secretary at Calhoun, and Mrs. Pelican, registrar's office personnel, also from Calhoun.

Tammy McLoughlin, the Kiwanis immediate past president, gave a special message to the children who attended the event.

"These children are the future we have to look forward too," she said.
