Kennedy Student to Present at Prestigious Conference

Rachel Abramowitz will be the youngest person ever to present at the American Psychology Law Society Conference in New Orleans.

Rachel Abramowitz, a senior at Kennedy High School, will present her work at the American Psychology Law Society Conference in New Orleans in March.

She will be the youngest presenter ever and will be speaking in front of doctors, graduate students, professors and researchers. She will also present her work at the Long Island Psychology Fair in January.

“To be the youngest presenter at the American Psychology Law Society Conference is the most accomplishing feeling, and I couldn’t be more excited for the experience,” Abramowitz said.

Her project titled, “Why Innocent People Comply with Police Requests: The Role of Just World Beliefs and Public Self Consciousness," presents the findings that the rate at which innocent people confess to crimes has increased significantly since 2005.

All of Abramowitz's research was conducted in partnership with Saul Kassin at CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

“When I realized my research was going to make an impact, that’s when I felt like a real scientist,” she said.

Her project was conducted as part of the districtwide Advanced Science Research Program, which enables students to select a topic of focus to explore and research for one culminating piece of work.
