Palma Discusses Merrick School Budget, Security

Merrick Superintendent Dr. Dominic Palma recently spoke to Patch about updates with the upcoming 2013-14 proposed school budget and security in Merrick Schools.

“There’s nothing new on security,” Palma said. “We’re plugging ahead, working with the companies and we should have an update soon.”

Palma also said that the Board of Education looked at another draft of the proposed school budget, which is approximately $70,000 shy of the cap. The Board agreed that it would be wise to build the budget up to the cap.

The $70,000 will be put in a contingent line for equipment, Palma added.

The proposed budget, which is slated to be adopted in April, includes a tax levy which would go up 3.43 percent, which is the cap.

“In doing that, we will keep our class sizes small, all the services and programs will be in play and nothing will be changed or reduced,” Palma added.

One teaching position would be eliminated, Palma said, but that’s due to enrollment.
