James Saitta, Director of School Facilities for the North Merrick School District, gave an update at the April North Merrick School Board meeting regarding the ongoing cockroach issue at Old Mill Road Elementary school.

Saitta said that, thanks to regular visits by exterminators and modification to the building itself, the amount of sightings have been reduced to far more manageable proportions.

“Over the spring break, we put screening on all of the openings on the brickwork around the building, and put door sweeps on the exterior doors where it was needed,” Saitta said. we also treated several ‘hot spots’ around the building,” he said. “Since the last Board meeting, we’ve had a total of 17 roaches found at Old Mill. It’s a big improvement.”

President Neil Brown stated that efforts would continue until the roach problem at Old Mill Road was completely under control.
