Superintendent Offers Merrick Schools Safety, Security Update

The follow message was sent to district parents and guardians from Merrick
Superintendent Dominick Palma, Ph.D.

Over the last month, the Merrick school district has received many communications from concerned residents about school safety and security.

The Board of Education and I fully understand that there exists a range of viewpoints on the issue of school safety and the specific aspect of the use of Security Guards at school.

The District administration has been speaking with a variety of companies that provide security evaluations, guards and security technology to determine what the industry has to offer.

We are also in contact with other school districts to understand how they have enhanced security.  Please be sure that we will make a measured and thoughtful response to the school safety concerns.  While the Feb. 5 Board of Education meeting agenda is not yet set, it is likely that school safety will be discussed.

This will afford the community the opportunity to voice their opinions and the Board of Education to review administrative recommendations.
