Voters Approve Merrick Library Budget

By a margin of 161-71, Merokeans signed off today on a new library budget.

Merrick residents approved, by a vote of 161-71, a $2.59 million 2010/11 operating budget for the Merrick Library today. 

"The Board of Trustees, administration and staff of the Merrick Library are appreciative of the support shown by the Merrick community, and would like to thank all residents who came out to vote in support of our budget," Library Director Ellen Firer said tonight.  "We continue to strive to provide services that are responsive to the needs of the community, in a fiscally responsible manner." 

The library's current operating budget of $2.55 million will climb to $2.59 million in the next fiscal year, a 1.3 percent increase, with Merrick residents seeing a 1 percent hike in library taxes.

The total approved expenditure budget, when factoring in debt service payments, is $3.28 million, up from the current $3.25 million.  Full details of the budget, which goes into effect on July 1, can be found here

Library trustee Timothy Whalen ran unopposed for another term on the board.
