These 7 Roads Are The Most Clogged on Long Island

Do you dare cross these paths? Roads ranked by highest daily traffic.

Long Island is notorious across the country for its heavy traffic, but can you name the most congested stretch of roadway in the region?

We took the latest data available from New York State – from 2011 – and pulled out local roads with the most traffic. Each road is ranked by the average daily traffic, and counts any vehicle on the road.

Here's the list:

1. Southern State Parkway
Between Merrick Ave. and Route 106/25A
Average Daily Traffic: 167,521

2. Long Island Expressway I-495
Between Nassau/Suffolk Border and Route 110 Overpass
Average Daily Traffic: 166,425

3. Meadowbrook State Parkway
Between Route 24 and Stewart Avenue
Average Daily Traffic: 114,748

4. Seaford-Oyster Bay Expwy (R. 135)
Between Broadway and Old Country Road
Average Daily Traffic: 89,088

5. Sunrise Highway (NY27)
Between Route 135 and Route 107
Average Daily Traffic: 52,729

6. Sunrise Highway (NY27)
Between Park Boulevard and 27A
Average Daily Traffic: 51,951

7. Route 25A (Brookhaven)
Between Echo Avenue and Route 83 (Patchogue-Mt. Sinai Road)
Average Daily Traffic: 50,560

As for the least busy and busiest in the state, here's the scoop.

With a tie for 3 cars average per day:

Bruce LaTourret — that's the listed name of the road — in the Town of Tompkins in Delaware County; and Gleason Road in the Town of Clare in St. Lawrence County – which shares a border with Canada.

And the busiest?

With an average of 200,446 cars per day, I-278 and NY 440 near the Victory Boulevard Exit and the Bayonne Bridge in Staten Island.
