McDonough and Fuschillo Meet with Levy-Lakeside Kids

Assemblyman David McDonough, R-Merrick and Senator Charles Fuschillo, R-Merrick, recently visited the fifth and sixth grade classes at the Levy-Lakeside Elementary School.

The Assemblyman and Senator were there to promote civic engagement and discuss the role local government plays in the lives of young people.

“When we talk about the youth participation in government, all too often the sentence begins with the ‘a lack of’ civic engagement,” said McDonough. “I believe it is essential that we promote an interest in government amongst younger generations."Government touches every part of a young person’s life from educational aid to their safety on the athletic field. Without fostering a sense of civic engagement in our young people, we fail in our efforts to promote American democracy.”

“The students quizzed the Senator and I with a number of insightful and thought-provoking questions. In addition, we discussed several pieces of legislation, including the ignition interlock device to prevent drunk driving, and I hope they enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed speaking with them,” concluded McDonough.
