Legislation Passed to Catch Speeding Drivers in School Zones

New law will allow districts to enter pilot program to catch people speeding in school zones.

New legislation was signed into law Wednesday that helps protect students in school zones.

Assemb. Dave McDonough, R-Merrick, announced Assembly Bill 9206 was signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to establish speed monitoring systems in school zones on Long Island.

The new law will allow Nassau and Suffolk Counties to start four-year pilot programs to fine drivers who exceed school zone speed limits, said McDonough.

“I have been a long-time advocate of public safety and this legislation marks a substantial victory in the fight to prevent speeding and other dangerous traffic violations in the vicinity of our local schools,” said McDonough. “This law ensures our students will receive the high quality of safety they deserve as they go to and from school.”
