Police: Merrick Man Stole Thousands in Sports Memorabilia

Police investigation leads to arrest for July grand larceny.

A Merrick man was arrested at his residence Thursday afternoon after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of sports memorabilia from a Westbury store back in July.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 3 p.m. on July 5, 29-year-old Adam D. Gibson committed grand larceny at A&S Sports Store, located at 825 Carman Ave. in Westbury.

After entering the store, police said Gibson placed sports memorabilia -- including cards -- valued at more than $2,000 into his cargo shorts pockets. He then proceeded to leave without paying.

An investigation led detectives to Gibson’s home in Merrick on Thursday afternoon to place him under arrest.

Police said that when Gibson noticed the detectives near his home, he fled the scene in his 2011 Infiniti at a high rate of speed, failing to stop for multiple vehicle and traffic signs.

The detectives followed Gibson for a short time before responding back to his home. Police said Gibson returned home a short time later where he was placed under arrest.

While placing him under arrest, police said Gibson flailed his arms in an attempt to avoid being handcuffed. There were no injuries reported.

Gibson is charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree, resisting arrest, reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

He will be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
