Pit Bull Victim Released from NUMC [Video]

Shashi Sharma was at hospital since attack; still has one more surgery left.

Shashi Sharma sat quietly while her team of doctors, lead by Dr. Louis Riina, described the wounds she had after two pit bulls attacked her on Sept. 29 while she was walking at the Brookside School track.

One pit bull was caught the day of the attack, a second kept police on the hunt in Merrick for about two weeks until it was finally shot and killed in front of Precious Kids II in North Merrick.

Sharma was released Tuesday from Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) after being treated in the burn unit and in the intensive care unit since the incident.

According to Riina, Sharma had come into NUMC in the trama center with extensive soft tissue damage to all four extremities. She also had nerve damage, tendon damage and muscle damage, as well as lacerations to her face and scalp.

Riina said that Sharma still has one more surgery to go in order to close some of the open wounds that are still being dressed and will continue to monitor her closely in case another surgery is needed in the near future to improve upon the ones she had.

"I am still recovering every day," Sharma said in a brief statement.

Riina also said that Sharma has regained use of all of her limbs and can walk fine, although she will need the use of a walker for a period of time.

"It's a matter of confidence and a matter of strength. Sharma is very tired and she is still recuperating," Riina said. He is also making arrangements for Sharma to have outpatient therapy so that she can continue making progress with her recovery.

Sharma's son, Suraj, was also present at the press conference and said that he was amazed by his mother's strength during the trying time for the family.

"She is a very strong, strong woman. I have learned that over the years," he said.

Suraj explained that his mother asked the family not to talk about the incident and will probably not be returning to the scene of the attack.

"While her mental state is well, we don't see that happening," he said.
