Merrick Man Arrested for Sacred Heart Burglary

A Merrick man was arrested Wednesday for his alleged role in an overnight burglary at Sacred Heart School and Church, police said.

According to detectives, officers responded to a call regarding a burglary at Sacred Heart Church at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, they were told that someone had broken into the Pastoral Center via the rear window and stole an unspecified amount of cash and gift cards.

Police added that the same person allegedly broke into Sacred Heart School, although nothing was reportedly taken.

Cops recovered surveillance video, which allegedly identified Salvatore C. Buonauro, 46, of Merrick. Detectives were told that he's a regular member of the community outreach program at the church. Buonauro was placed under arrest at his home, and he was also found to be in possession of heroin, police said.

Buonauro has been charged with two counts of third-degree burglary and one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance. His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
