UPDATE: Dog Attack Sends Merrick Woman to Hospital

An argument between two women prompted the dog to attack, police said.

A Merrick woman was sent to Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) with non-life threatening dog bites to her arms and head after a pitbull that was living in her home attacked her.

Nassau County Police Officer Bill Iger, who was on the scene, told Merrick Patch that two women who share the house on Bridge Street were bickering in the backyard. As the fight escalated, the dog became more aggressive and took the aggression out on the woman who was fighting with the dog's owner. The owner of the dogs had nicks and cuts, while the other woman was taken by police ambulance to NUMC.

"This incident happened in the rear yard, which is a common area. The investigation is continuing," Iger said.

The Town of Hempstead Animal Control division was also at the scene. According to Iger, there were five dogs on the scene, all pitbulls. Only three of the five dogs were involved in the attack. One of the dogs was tranquilized while another ran loose and was later located in the area by Emergency Service Police Officers.

According to Fifth Squad Detectives, Town of Hempstead removed the dogs from the home and issued summonses.
