A police officer who heroically saved a suicidal teen from jumping to his death will retire next week.
Nassau County Police said Seventh Precinct Officer Angela Amato will be ending her career "in a way that does our community proud" after swooping in to save a teen in trouble.
Last Wednesday, Amato responded to a Wantagh Parkway overpass and found a 16-year-old boy who had climbed over the railing, police said. The teen was threatening to end his life by jumping onto the highway.
"It broke my heart that a 16 year old felt so helpless," Amato wrote on Patch. "I pray for him. Such a sweet guy! I was glad I was able to do what I did. Helping someone is truly the best part of being a police officer."
