Islanders Teach Fayette Students the Value of Hard Work

Team members John Tavares, Colin McDonald and Travis Hamonic visited the school on Monday morning.

Fayette Elementary School students got a special treat on Monday morning--a visit from the New York Islanders.

As a way to say thank you to Fayette students who sang at an Islander game on Nov. 12, team members, John Tavares, Colin McDonald and Travis Hamonic spent time with students and taught them the value of hard work and respecting one another.

Hamonic told students that even through they may not agree with their fellow classmates at times, they should always support each other.

"Teamwork is really important and not only in school," he said. "You have to work with one another. It's not easy and sometimes you may not like what another person is doing, but they may need that support."

Tavares spoke of the significance of being a good student and human being.

"It's important to do your schoolwork and get your studies done," he said. "Being smart, being a good student and a good friend is important. Always have respect for one another."

Principal Howard Merims said that the Islanders' visit benefited the students.

"As a school we are very excited that our hometown team can visit and teach the message of teamwork, hard work and unity to our students," he said.

At the end of presentation students were able to ask the athletes questions.

A small boy, who said that he plays soccer and lacrosse, asked if he can play hockey too.

"You can do anything that you want to do," McDonald said.
