Harborfields Family Turns World into A Global Classroom

When it comes to teaching kids about the planet, faraway countries are about to seem a little nearer. That’s thanks to philanthropist Paige Sanborn and her children: 13-year-0ld Mackenzie and 10-year-old Austin, who are students in the Harborfields Central School District. With a Friday departure, the Sanborns are spending the next three months traveling the world, and sharing their stories about the people they meet via Going Global’s Your Virtual Passport, a new educational multimedia travel web platform featuring live and archived virtual field trips, videos, blogs, downloadable lesson plans and more.

Mineola Lions Donates $1,000 to Special Olympics

With the start of 2014, the Mineola Lions Club has continued its charitable giving to community groups as well as organizations serving disabled individuals. The Club recently donated $1,000 to the Special Olympics, New York, Inc., Long Island Region.

3 Out of 4 LI Intel Finalists from Syosset-Jericho Area

Preeti Kakani of Jericho High School, Kaitlyn Shin of Jericho High School, and John Clarke of Syosset are among four high school students on Long Island chosen as finalists for the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search. 

The students will go to Washington, DC in March for final judging in prestigious competition.

How Outreach Programs are Helping Cancer Survivors Stay Healthy

Since being diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago West Islip resident Teresa Doherty says she is confident that all her health needs are being met. 

In addition to physical needs she makes sure to address her mental well-being as well, and takes advantage of  a series of free services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage available at the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore.

Scholarship Set Up To Honor Cory Hubbard's Memory

As Cory Hubbard is laid to rest on Wednesday, a scholarship fund has been set up to keep his memory alive forever. The Noah Hallock Homestead has become a staple in Rocky Point and thanks to local residents and legislators all of its history will be preserved. Homestead tragically died in a hit-and-run accident.

Did you know the top item requested by teens living in homeless shelters is a pair of jeans? The Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Club, in collaboration with South Shore Community Organization, The Town of Islip Youth Bureau, and Keep Islip Clean, is sponsoring a “Teens for Jeans” campaign at Islip High School.
