Debbie Gibson Reflects on Time in Merrick

  1. You were raised in Merrick. How did that contribute to the success you became? Merrick and all of Long Island is great for the arts! I was always in a community theater production or talent contest, and Merrick has amazing arts programs in the schools and amazing teachers both private and public. Mr. Thayer was a choir teacher that stands out in my memory. Even Dr. Wheeler, my Elementary school teacher, followed my career and attended my concerts.
  2. Did you ever perform in Merrick? If so, tell me more about that. YES! I performed in South Pacific at Sacred Heart Church, Sound of Music at Cure of Ars with all my sisters....MANY Merrick performance memories.
  3. What kinds of things did you like to do in the local area? Where did you like to go? I loved Meroke Lanes and Gables, and I still eat at Galleria Pizza!
  4. Tell me about your break. When was the moment you knew that you had made it? I knew I made it when my first single was in the jukebox at the East Bay Diner!
  5. What has been the highlight of your professional career? Highlight is probably winning ASCAP's songwriter of the year award.
  6. Do you ever come back to Merrick? YES! I was in Merrick last year visiting my Aunt and Uncle and cousins for Christmas time. Also I see my great friend Ron Luparello. We usually end up at Galleria or the Fire House.
  7. You remain the youngest female to write, record, and perform a #1 single. What does that honor mean to you? It is CRAZY to me and I would love to mentor the kid who is gonna BREAK that record! I always prided myself on being self sufficient. It is empowering.
  8. What are you currently working on? I perform regularly and I am currently writing my new album. I cannot tell you how excited I am...it is the most authentic music I have ever had the honor of channelling.
  9. What do you miss most about living in Merrick? I miss most the kids running after the Good Humor truck. I tell my man about it all the time..."Mom! Quick! Ice Cream Man...I need money!"
  10. Finish this sentence. You know you're from Merrick when... You can say "Lynbrook, Rockville Center, Baldwin, Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Amityville, Copiague, Lindenhurst, aaaaand Babylon" as fast as I JUST DID!  Also, if you bought your sandwich meats at the original Cow's Corner. Well, that is how you know you are OLD SCHOOL MERRICK!
