North Merrick Schools Talks Budget Challenges

The North Merrick Board of Education recently held a budget presentation as they prepare the proposed 2013-14 school budget.

One challenge facing the district is the amount of state aid received. According to the presentation, North Merrick will receive a "significant difference." This final amount is subject to change based on the adoption of the state budget on April 1.

"Our state officials need to continue to go to bat for North Merrick and all of Nassau County," school officials said.

Another obstacle is the tax certiorari, in which school districts will now be responsible for the repayment of their share of successfully contested tax assessments. Districts will need to create a new budget line for anticipated repayments.

On March 5 at 7 p.m., the district will provide a detailed presentation on how to close the gap, which includes an in-depth look at the entire three-part budget.
