Calhoun High School has been chosen as the recipient of the 2012 Youth Transition Award for New York State.
This prestigious award recognizes high schools that successfully transition special needs youth from high school into the workforce. The Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) presented the award to Principal Mr. David Seinfeld, Ms. Cheryl Gitlitz, District-Wide Transition Coordinator and Mrs. Mary Jo Kennedy, Vocational & Transitional Services at The Long Island Home, at the annual “Works for Me” event on Oct. 17 in Albany.

The District was recognized for its efforts in fostering partnerships between high school students with special learning needs and community employers. Under the leadership of Ms. Cheryl Gitlitz and Ms. Emily Paluseo, Special Education Chair, many students graduate and transition into meaningful job opportunities.
Gitlitz and Paluseo have contributed a great deal of energy, creativity, student-centered approach and commitment in providing guidance and practical work experience to students with special needs that will encourage and empower them to become active members of the workforce.
