Parents Concerned About Old Mill Bug Infestation

Kids at Old Mill Elementary School in North Merrick are complaining about bug problems in the building, according to Fios 1 News.

According to the report, the school has been infested with Palmetto Bugs for the past few months, and parents are concerned about their children's health.

According to EcoSmart.com, If indoors, Palmetto Bugs like to stick to food preparation areas like restaurants, grocery stores, and bakeries. They also like warm, moist locations like boiler rooms and sewers.

"This problem has been going on since Spring, and I'm concerned," Helene Pino told Fios. "My daughter wants to have hot lunches in the school, and it's a concern for me."

"My daughter said that her teacher sees them when they open the closet to get paper out," Natalie Belajonas added. "They scream. It's not only the bugs that are disgusting, but the diseases they carry."

School officials have responded by using traps to alleviate the bug problems, and they told Fios that the situation will be re-evaluated in 40 days.
