The LIRR is advising commuters traveling to Penn Station to leave up to 30 minutes of additional travel time for this morning's rush hour commute due to a flooding condition near one of the East River Tunnels at Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens.
Some trains may be canceled while others may be diverted to the Atlantic Avenue Terminal in Brooklyn where commuters can connect with 10 NYC subway lines. The LIRR will be working throughout the night with crews and equipment from the FDNY, the New York City Transit Authority, MTA Bridges & Tunnels and Amtrak to try and address the flooding issue. Currently, LIRR workers are pumping 2,000 gallons of water per minute from the area. However, due to the heavy rains, ground saturation and higher than normal East River tides, it is not certain if the area will be clear of water during the morning rush hour.
Commuters are advised to continue to check the LIRR Web site for the latest updates.
