Aug. 16: Newbridge Road Protest, Rescued Horses, Marsh Madness

Five things to know today.

"Five Things You Need to Know Today" now features stories and events from Bellmore, Merrick and East Meadow! Here are some things to look out for on this Tuesday.

  • Hundreds of Verizon employees protested on Newbridge Road in North Bellmore Monday after the company said it sought more than $1 billion in concessions from workers.
  • Five horses from the Lakewood Stables in West Hempstead nearly drowned at a Merrick day camp during Sunday's rainstorm. The torrential rains that started Saturday night flooded Coleman Country Day Camp in Merrick, which had been renting the horses for the summer.
  • Have you ever checked out Marsh Madness? Patch's Stacey Sweet took a closer look at the phenomenon in this week's edition of "Secrets of the South Shore."
  • Head on down to the Bellmore Memorial Library at 1 p.m. for some Mah Jongg fun. Beginners are welcomed. If you always wanted to learn, here’s your chance!
  • St. Raphael's Church in East Meadow will be having a caretaker support group at 7p.m. Being the primary caretaker of anyone in your life, whether it be a parent, spouse, child or relative can be a stressful situation. This group allows people to connect with others in the same situation. For additional details, please contact 516-785-0236.
