Former Bakery Remains Vacant

Tell us what you think should fill the property.

Merrick Avenue is the home of thriving businesses, but some storefronts have remained shuttered for years.

A building that once held a bakery at 24 Merrick Avenue has been closed for more than a year, according to business owners and managers in the area.

Linda, manager of The Chwatsky Woman, which is adjacent to the property, said that the building has been empty since the clothing store moved in about two years ago.

"I would like to see anything that will be bring business to this area to open in that building," she said. "I know that a lot of people have been asking about that property."

Robbie Everfield of Merrick said that opening a food business could never hurt.

"You walk up and down this street and all you see is food," he said. "I think a restaurant like a Checkers would be good."
