Bites Nearby: Shiro of Japan

Your guide to eating out locally.

The disaster in Japan has touched all of our lives one way or another and this week, Merrick Patch found a place for you to have a delicious meal as well as help those that have been devastated from the earthquake and tsunami.

Known for its Hibachi, Shiro of Japan in Carle Place doesn’t skimp on the food or the flare. Pull your chair up to the Hibachi table and start your meal off with a little hot sake and a wealth of appetizers that are both Japanese and fusion. The fish and chips Shiro style is a great twist on an English pub favorite, while the shrimp and vegetable tempura gets the mouth watering.

While your chef is making a flaming volcano, settle in with the menu and pick your choice of chicken, steak, shrimp or scallops, or go even more upscale with filet mignon, tuna steak, prawns or even twin lobster tail. No meal is complete at Shiro without an order of Hibachi fried rice, which is so buttery and flavorful, it will leave you wanting more.

If fancy tricks aren’t your thing, Shiro also has regular dining tables where patrons can order off the Hibachi menu, as well as the noodle and sushi menus.  Get your sushi a la cart or pick a combination platter of sashimi and/or sushi.

The noodle menu comes complete with soba and udon noodles. Try the shrimp tempura udon noodles for a taste-bud treat.

Although many may not think about dessert at Japanese eateries, Shiro of Japan has a wide selection from tiramisu to chocolate pyramid cake. A crowd favorite, though, is the dessert that blends an American favorite with a Japanese technique – tempura cheesecake. It’s sweet, crunchy and a sure-fire reason to cheat on your diet.

In honor of Japan, Shiro is hosting a fundraising event on April 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets for the event are $150 and will include raffles, gift baskets and prizes.  All the money raised will go to Japan relief.
