Woman, Child Escape Merrick Avenue Van Fire

The fire broke out in the rear of the vehicle while they were driving northbound across from Merrick Avenue Middle School.

A woman and her child were able to escape unharmed after their van went on fire while she was driving on Merrick Avenue across from Merrick Avenue Middle School Wednesday morning.

According to Assistant Chief James Rogers of the North Merrick Fire Department, the woman was heading northbound near the Nancy Boulevard intersection at 8:25 a.m. when the fire started in the rear of her vehicle.

"She got out, and she got her child out," Rogers said. "After they escaped, the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames."

Neither the woman or her child were injured. The North Merrick Fire Department responded with an engine, ladder truck and an ambulance. Merrick Avenue was closed for about 30 minutes in both directions while firefighters secured the scene.
