UPDATE: Lockout Ends After Authorities Catch Loose Dogs

UPDATE: The North Merrick School District lockout has ended after authorities have captured two loose dogs that were spotted on Little Whaleneck Road and Merrick Avenue.

The district had been on lockout after two dogs were spotted approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday.

According to Deputy Superintendent Beth Friedman, nobody was allowed in or out of Old Mill Road, Camp Avenue and Fayette Schools until the situation was resolved

Friedman said the dogs were spotted on Little Whaleneck Road and then headed towards Merrick Avenue. Witnesses said that the dogs were Pit Bulls, but that wasn't confirmed by school officials.

All three schools have been notified, and Merrick Avenue Middle School was informed as well.

"All children are safe," the district said in an email to parents. "Our lockout has been removed."
