Feller: Camp Avenue Student Brought Ammunition Shells to School

The student was showing them to classmates when they were discovered and police were called.

Police were called to Camp Avenue School Monday morning after a student brought three ammunition shells in to show to friends, according to North Merrick Superintendent David Feller.

"This appeared to be a clear mistake in judgment with no intent to do harm," Feller said in an email to parents. "Mr. Reinken immediately confiscated the items, contacted police and parents and conducted an investigation."

Feller added that there was no action taken by police and there was no imminent danger.

However, he said, "these items are considered to be inappropriate and as such, we are following the district’s procedures as outlined in our code of conduct. No student was harmed, injured or threatened yesterday. However, we must take matters like this seriously which is why police were contacted."

"Once again, please reinforce with your child that no object that appears to be a weapon or weapon like device should ever be brought to school," Feller added. "We will certainly continue to reinforce this message in school as well. Thank you for your cooperation."
