A traffic light is put at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Hewlett Avenue in Merrick.
First Precinct officers are on scene directing traffic until the malfunction is attended to. Flares have been placed in the roadway as a precaution as well.
As of 1:30 p.m., most of the visible traffic build-up was scene on Hewlett Avenue for people heading northbound.
