Not Just Books: This Week's Library Events

There are a variety of things going on at the Merrick and North Merrick libraries this week.

Many people would be surprised to find out how many things actually go on at the library. Most things at the Merrick and North Merrick libraries are even free to residents.

On Monday, the Merrick Library will host an AARP defensive driving class. Cost is $17 for AARP members, $19 for non-members. The class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., teens can take part in a cooking class at a cost of $3. There will also be a defensive driving class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the North Merrick Library.

On Tuesday, children are urged to express their thoughts and dreams from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Children entering grades three to five in September can design and answer questions about themselves with personalized posters at the Merrick Library. From 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the North Merrick Library there is picture book story time for ages three to five.

Need something to get through the middle of the week? From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Merrick Library, learn how to become a sportscaster. This is a hands-on class with Vinny Micucci a professional Sportscaster who has a nearly 15 years experience in covering sport’s events on radio and TV. At the North Merrick Library, enjoy the sounds of the Bob Cantwell New Orleans Jazz Band from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Thursday will see the trash or treasure antique road show at the Merrick Library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eddie Costello is back with his antiques roadshow program. Learn how to identify today’s hottest antiques and collectibles. There is another installment of defensive driving from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the North Merrick Library.

Friday there will be a Star Wars special for children entering grades two through six at the Merrick Library from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
