North Merrick Library Board, New Trustee, Thank Community

The budget was passed on April 25 and a new trustee was elected.

On behalf of the North Merrick Library Board of Trustees, library director, Tom Witt would like to thank the residents of the community for passing the library budget for fiscal year July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

The library trustees are focusing on sustaining and modernizing library services within a fiscally responsible budget. Upcoming projects include making necessary repairs to the 50-year old building, carefully considering priorities and finding a way to both protect a community asset and keep long-term expenses down.

At the same time, library use continues to rise. Circulation is up 6.2 percent from the last five years. Patrons are not only borrowing books and e-books, DVDs and music CDs, but also using free museum passes, attending concerts and bringing children to a wide variety of fun and educational programs.

In addition to the library budget, Richard Smith ran unopposed for former trustee, Carol Anthony's, seat. He received 101 votes, successfully electing him to the board.

"I want to take opportunity to thank the people that supported my candidacy and subsequent election to the position of North Merrick Library Trustee. I am looking forward to working with my fellow dedicated trustees bringing the North Merrick Library into the 21st century," he said.
