Merrick Residents Gather For Menorah Lighting

This year, Hanukah will coincide with Thanksgiving for the first time since 1884.

On a very frigid night, Merrick residents gathered to celebrate the beginning of Hanukah, which coincides with Thanksgiving for the first time since 1884.

The community came together for the Merrick Chamber of Commerce's Menorah Lighting on Merrick Avenue on Sunday evening.

Residents, business owners and elected officials attended the annual event.

"It's a cold evening but also a great time of year," Comptroller George Maragos said. "Happy Holidays to you all."

"This is a time that we as a community come together," Chamber President Randy Shotland told attendees. "We thank you for coming out on this cold night, but important time."

It is the first time in almost 100 years that Hanukah and Thanksgiving overlap.

"The next time it will happen will be around 2070," Shotland said.

On the coldest night of the year, residents took photos of the menorah, socialized and enjoyed refreshments.

"It's very chilly, but we are happy to be here," Lisa Deturris said.
