Hundreds Attend Autism Fundraiser in Merrick

Heineken With a Heart and Outback Steakhouse hosted a fundraiser for the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America.

More than 500 people attended an autism fundraiser hosted by Heineken With a Heart and Outback Steakhouse on Monday.

The proceeds of the sold out event, which took place at Outback Steakhouse in Merrick, will go towards the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Austism Society of America.

The money raised will fund iPads, school trips and class makeovers for schools with children with disabilities.

Jeff Abbate, managing partner of Outback Steakhouse, said that he was very pleased with the event.

"It was a great turnout and it's our third year," he said. "You need to give back to the community."

Last year's event raised more than $30,000.

Suzanne Reek, president of the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Austism Society of America, said the event is dear to her heart.

Her 13-year-old son has autism and can only say 10 words--Outback is one of them.

"My son came to Outback five years ago and Jeff and showed him how to sit and order from a menu," she said. "I trained the employees how to interact with children with autism."

She said that the event supported a great cause.

"It is going to help purchase iPads for children who cannot speak," she said. "Every child deserves a voice."
